Macau has secured the 6th position globally and 2nd in Asia in the Global Services Trade Development Index Report 2026. The report, released during the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) in Beijing, highlights Macau’s international competitiveness in the services sector.
The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) executive director, Larry Leong, attributed this success to the city’s service-dominated economy, integration with Hengqin, and ongoing economic diversification efforts. He noted that the integration has opened new channels for cross-border collaboration.
The Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation partnered with the World Bank Office in China to publish the index. The ranking evaluates economies on services trade development, and the top ten list includes the United States, Luxembourg, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Macao China, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Sweden.
Macau’s high ranking reflects its strategic position as a regional service hub, connecting China with Portuguese-speaking countries. The assessment praised the region’s service-oriented economy, internationalization, and regional competitiveness.
With services accounting for over 90% of its GDP, the city has seen rapid growth in services exports, alongside improvements in quality and efficiency. Leong emphasized the Third Five-Year Plan’s focus on integrating services trade and consumption, aiming for sustainable growth.
At CIFTIS, IPIM showcased Macau’s investment environment and support services, featuring 15 enterprises from the city and Hengqin in the Big Health and high-tech sectors. The institute aims to attract high-quality service projects, promoting long-term prosperity through partnerships with mainland and international entities.
