MTV Hustle returns for fifth season

India’s rap reality show MTV Hustle will return for its fifth season on August 8, 2026, featuring a new theme, a larger prize, and returning mentors.

The program, now one of the country’s leading platforms for underground hip-hop talent, will air every Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 PM IST on MTV India. Episodes will also be available on JioHotstar.

Apna Homeground: A New Theme for Season 5

This year’s edition adopts the theme Apna Homeground, urging contestants to create tracks inspired by their origins, hometowns, and life experiences. The focus aligns with efforts to showcase the diversity of India’s desi hip-hop scene, where regional languages, local challenges, and cultural identity shape the music.

The winner will take home ₹1 crore, the show’s largest cash prize to date. The increase reflects the growing commercial success of Indian rap, which has expanded from underground scenes to streaming charts and major festival slots in under ten years.

Badshah, returning as Rap Supremo, described the prize as acknowledgment of the culture’s progress. “Hustle has always been about finding artists with real stories,” he said. “Every season, we’ve seen talent emerge from every part of the country and carve out a space in Indian hip-hop.”

He explained that the theme was selected because it represents where every artist’s journey begins.

Judges and Contestants: Who’s Returning?

The judging panel includes Badshah alongside EPR, MC Square, Paradox, and Agsy. All are prominent figures in India’s rap scene, with MC Square having won the show’s second season in 2022.

The competition will use a squad-based format, where mentors guide teams through challenges testing lyrics, performance, and storytelling. Past seasons have included freestyle battles and full-length tracks, often mixing regional languages with Hindi and English.

The contestant lineup hasn’t been revealed yet. Auditions typically attract thousands from cities and towns, with many using the platform to start careers. Past winners like M-Zee Bella and Lashcurry have released hit singles and worked with Bollywood composers.

Viewers often connect with the show’s raw depiction of youth culture. Contestants frequently tackle issues like unemployment, inequality, and personal struggles—topics rarely explored in mainstream entertainment.

Where Hip-Hop Meets the Mainstream

MTV Hustle launched in 2019 as one of India’s first reality shows dedicated to rap. At the time, desi hip-hop was a niche genre, confined to YouTube and local performances. The show’s success helped change that, introducing new rappers to national audiences and proving demand for non-film music.

The format combines original music, battles, and mentorship, often serving as a career launchpad. Some critics argue the competitive structure oversimplifies hip-hop’s roots in community and protest, but producers say it gives voice to artists who might otherwise go unnoticed.

After a two-year break, the fifth season arrives as Indian rap continues to evolve. Artists like DIVINE and Raftaar have gained success in films and advertising. While the market grows more crowded, MTV Hustle remains one of the few platforms offering underground talent a chance at visibility.

New episodes of MTV Hustle Season 5 will begin streaming at 7:00 PM IST on August 8.
